While the entire nation was dancing with the ‘3 Idiots’ shouting All is well. We almost forgot the 4th and the most important Idiot where All is Definitely not well.
That Idiot that affects us irrespective of we liking it or not and is a part of our daily life directly or indirectly. The most important factor is that this Idiot is as powerful as affecting and shaping up our perceptions, attitude and everyone has an opinion about it.
Either this Idiot excites you or irritates you but yes, it definitely affects you to the core. And that my dear friends is our very OWN IDIOT BOX – the television
I realised this during my stay back home during Diwali as I was exposed to it to the maximum.
All I saw was:-
· A down market discussion (read Verbal Wrestling) with embarrassing swearing and foul language headed by none other than Rakhi Sawant called ‘RAKHI ka Insaaf’ .
· With Daily soaps either centric towards child marriage, dowry and family problems or loosely (some directly) based on famous movie plots having names that sounds more like title songs than titles themselves.
· Even the so called ‘youth channels ‘ like MTV and Bindaas having serials and programmes only related to hook ups , link ups, back stabbing , cheating , bitching etc . I mean, are these the only things our youngistan is made of. Where are the serials like ’Malgudi Days’, 'Bharat ek Khoj', ‘Dekh bhai Delh’, ‘Hum Log’, ‘yeh jo hai Zindagi’, ‘Hip Hip Hurray’, ’Hum Paanch’, ‘Campus’, Bornvita Quiz contest’ and the very recent Sarabhai vs Sarabhai that used to talk more about togetherness, knowledge and most importantly positivity and still being hot favourites amongst all .
· Most disturbing are the news channels where they are busy showcasing bulletins like ‘saas and the city’, ‘Indore ka Iccha dhari Naag’,’Obama ki Udaan ‘and not to forget the re- runs of Laughter shows and Big Boss with titles like ‘Khali ki nahi chali’ .
So aren’t we getting nearer to the answer to the question, ’why is there an increase in negativity, family feuds, crimes, link ups break ups etc like never before.’
Is the media reflecting the changing nature of our society or actually the factor responsible for changing it?
And let us not forget that,’though we criticise them in public, WE DO watch them at home...’
The Big Question is – Who is to be blamed?
Think About it J
U wont believe it, I was having this discussion with dad over dinner last night. Especially about how "Big Boss" is so overrated and it seems all scripted with one person (in this season Dolly) sent to create havoc.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the news channels are senseless. Star news was a disappointment. You wont believe it, the gujarati news makes more sense than India TV and the like.
Anyway I dont really know if this only could be classified as the "fourth" idiot, as we have a lot of such idiotic things in our life who can win the title. :)
Well written though :)
well said varun.i totally agree wit u.especially d news channels.they r busy selling news no matter what it is.thank god i am not addicted to this idiot box.i hardly watch it.good goin:)
ReplyDeletecant believe ur blog coincides so well with a time when i just switched on the tv and saw news abt how rakhi's show has actually killed someone!! Really sad to see how the indian television is shaping up..
ReplyDeleteNeway good going :) a very relevant write up. you can guess the relevance urself seeing what you blogged abt yest, has become news today :)
In a way it's a more honest part of us coming out into the open - the fact that we watch these tv shows at home but rip them apart in public goes to show on one hand - what we really are, and on the other - what kind of an image we wish to project in society. Soon we'll stop trying to project at all.. can't hide the truth for too long:)
ReplyDeleteI think it's more to do with many of these TV shows catering to that part of us that earlier genrations never dared to cater to - the sadist.
I feel media is just reflecting the changing nature of society. What is being shown on TV is merely an alarm bell. It's time to introspect.
@ Shachi - that is exactly my point .
ReplyDeleteMost of us ( Including me ) watch these shows and bulletins and then talk about how foolish the television industry is to showcase them.
Therefore one should be careful and think twice before solely blaming the Media and Entertainment Industry for its broadcasting quality .
We ask for it .
